401(k) Management PDF Print E-mail
Traditional company pension plans or "Defined Benefit" plans are rapidly disappearing and are being replaced by "Defined Contribution" plans such as the 401(k), the 403(b), employee stock ownership plans, and profit sharing plans. Companies are happy to escape the long-term obligations inherent in "Defined Benefit" plans.  The employee gains more flexibility over how his retirement money is invested, how much he will contribute to his plan and portability of his retirement savings. (See "Defined Benefit and Contribution Pension Plans")

One big problem with 401(k) type "Defined Contribution" plans is that the individual must decide how to invest his retirement account. Employees normally lack the experience and training to structure their accounts properly, resulting in a risk averse employee choosing only money market funds, thus denying himself the advantage of putting time and compounding in his favor. This same employee may try to create a balanced portfolio of selected mutual funds and inadvertently chooses similar funds. As a result, he takes much more risk in his portfolio than he realizes or intends. The situation is not helped when the company or plan sponsor provides a long laundry list of mutual funds. I think one of the worst we have seen was a large company that offered a choice of more than 100 different mutual funds. Studies show that statistically employees will use an average of only 2.4 different funds regardless of how many fund choices they have.

Orion Capital Management has a unique solution to this problem. We encourage plan sponsors to allow us to create several asset allocation or lifestyle portfolios. We then educate their employees to help them select the best asset allocation portfolio that fits their individual situations. We specialize in small company plans and even individual plans. We use a group of carefully selected independent third party administrators to create our plan designs. We match our plans to independent plan administrators based on the specific needs of the plan and its sponsor. Also, we are always mindful of the costs associated with 401(k) plans. In most cases, we can deliver a better plan at a lower cost than your current provider. If you are interested in a comparison of our offering with your current plan or if you are interested in establishing a plan, please do not hesitate to contact us. Fill out and submit our basic information sheet today, and we will begin the process.
